After getting settled in consistent resource production (consisting of Population, Energy, and Area), players move on to research new technologies that are supported by defensive structures and facilities, including a shipyard that allows players to begin building their fleet. Players begin on a random planet on a map, tasked with building resource generating plants to begin the great resource management simulation that comprises most of the game. Gameplay is similar to OGame, although in comparison has more updated graphics and animations, a more realistic universe, and lacks some of its pay-to-win elements, being supported mainly by subscriptions. Alpha is considered the de facto version 1.0, being the first server created it has gone through the most major updates since the games creation. Version 1.5 is longest running version of Astro Empires, it applies to servers from Alpha to Utopia. The differences in versions offer an insight into the timeline Astro Empires expansion since it was first incepted back in 2006. For example: Both Versions 2.0 & 3.0 induct a system called 'Fleet Maintenance' - while 1.5 does not. The player base currently stands at 16,000.Įach version varies altered game mechanics. At it's peak, Astro Empires had over 60,000 unique players spread across all their servers. The most recent being Babylon, and the first server being Alpha which opened on the 20th May 2006.
